چکیده
We present an analysis of the star formation rate in galaxies between 0.7 < z < 1.8 using Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrograph (NICMOS) grism spectral observations. We detect 163 galaxies in an area of ∼ 4.4 square arcminutes, 37 of which show possible Hα emission. We extend the observed Hα luminosity function (LF) in this redshift range to luminosities a factor of two fainter than earlier work, and are consistent in the region of overlap. Using the Hα LF, we estimate a star formation rate (SFR) density in this redshift range of 0.166M⊙yr Mpc (H0 = 75 kms Mpc), consistent with other estimates based on emission lines, and supporting the order of magnitude increase in SFR density between z = 0 and z = 1. Our measurement of SFR density is a factor of ≈ 2− 3 greater than that estimated from UV data, comparable to the factor observed locally, implying little evolution in the relative extinctions between UV and Hα out to z ≈ 1.3. The properties of their hosts provide important clues to the progenitors of different classes of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). The hosts themselves also constitute a sample of high-redshift star-forming galaxies which, unlike most other methods, is not selected on the luminosities of the galaxies themselves. We discuss what we have learnt from and about GRB host galaxies to date.

We present deep 3.6 m observations of three z 5 GRB host galaxies with the Spitzer Space Telescope. The host of GRB 060510B, at z 1⁄4 4:942, is detected with a flux density of 0:23 0:04 Jy, corresponding to a rest-frame V -band luminosity of 1:3 ; 10 L , or 0.15 L ;V ; z1⁄43.We do not detect the hosts of GRBs 060223A and 060522 and constrain their rest-frame V -band luminosity to<0.1 L ;V ; z1⁄...

We used fully cosmological, high resolution N-body+SPH simulations to follow the formation of disk galaxies with a rotational velocity between 140 and 280 Km/sec in a ΛCDM universe. The simulations include gas cooling, star formation (SF), the effects of a uniform UV background and a physically motivated description of feedback from supernovae (SN). Feedback parameters have been chosen to match...

The peak star formation intensity in starburst galaxies does not vary significantly from the local universe to redshift z∼6. We arrive at this conclusion through new surface brightness measurements of 47 starburst galaxies at z≃5−6, doubling the redshift range for such observations. These galaxies are spectroscopically confirmed in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF) through the GRism ACS progra...

We report medium resolution VLT ISAAC K-band spectroscopy of the nuclei of seven ultraluminous infrared galaxies. After accounting for stellar absorption features, we have detected several molecular hydrogen (H 2) v =1-0, 2-1, and 3-2 vibrational emission lines, as well as the HI Brγ and He I 2 1 P −2 1 S recombination lines. The relative H 2 line intensities show little variation between the o...
